2015 – “Medea” by Euripides

Posted on: May 9, 2015

Medea, daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis, has fled to Corinth with Jason after helping him against her father and brother. She and Jason have two sons. After many years, Jason decides to leave his wife and marry Glauce, the young daughter of Creon, the King of Corinth. Torn by jealousy and despair, Medea makes threats against King Creon and he decides to banish her. Medea pleads for a reprieve of one day which Creon grants. Banished and abandoned, Medea hatches a plan to murder the King’s daughter by sending her a poisoned garment. The princess dies as does her father who tries to save her. Medea then kills her two sons to further hurt Jason and then flees to Athens where King Aegeus has offered shelter.
