About us

The English Drama Group Salzburg is the logical offspring of the English Drama Group University of Salzburg. Having finished their studies at the university, many members still had close ties to the Drama Group and wanted to continue to participate in our productions. On the other hand, new members have come on board giving new impetus to the project. This combination of old and new members gives each production a unique individual quality, which our audiences have come to appreciate.

Under the coordination and direction of Ilse Lackenbauer, the group has presented various productions over the last 15 years (click on Archive), all of which were well received by the public. Some projects went on tour, like our Shakespearian highlight of 1999 The Winter’s Tale, which travelled as far as Weimar and Passau in Germany. Other productions and co-productions such as Chamber Music (2002), The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (2005) and After Juliet (2007) won prizes (see Reviews and Awards). After so many successful years, Ilse Lackenbauer decided it was time to take a graceful bow and handed over the group to Michael Darmanin, her assistant and mainstay of the group for over 15 years.

The English Drama Group Salzburg would not work without the support of various regulars behind the wings. For many years now Alois Lobendanz, Hellmut Hölzl, Arnold Wallner, Michael Darmanin and too many others to list here, have helped, in their own way, to make each production a success.

The group gets together every autumn to plan the following year's production and rehearsals for that production normally start after the Christmas break. After about three months of rehearsals and pre-production work, the play is presented to the public (usually at the Kleines Theater in Schallmoos) for four or five nights consecutively. Some plays are so successful that they are given reruns at a later date.

See News for information about our next production.

Click on contact if you are an English native speaker or speak very good English and live in Salzburg and would like to join the group. The group is very informal and friendly. Age, sex or any other form of self definition is completely irrelevant. All we are looking for are persons with excellent English, lots of enthusiasm and a high level of commitment
